On January 27, 2020, at approximately 12:30 a.m., a State Police patrol unit from North Syracuse was traveling westbound on the NYS Thruway when they observed a 2013 Hyundai speeding (80 mph in a 65mph), and driving over the fog line several times. Troopers pulled the vehicle over, as the Troopers walked up to the driver, the driver sped off. The vehicle continued westbound and attempted to exit the Thruway at Exit 35, when the driver lost control, struck a guide rail and overturned, coming to rest off the shoulder of the roadway.
All three occupants then fled on foot from the vehicle. Troopers immediately took a female in custody. Officers from the town of DeWitt Police Department located a second female that fled and placed her into custody. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s AIR1, who responded to the area, was able to locate the third individual hiding in a wooded area near the crash scene.
All three suspects are juveniles. The driver, a 16-year-old male from Syracuse, NY was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd degree, a class “D” felony and Fleeing from a Police Officer 3rd degree, a class “A” misdemeanor.
Two passengers in the vehicle, a 17-year-old female, from Utica, NY and a 15-year-old female, from Utica, NY, were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd degree, a class “D” felony.
During the investigation, Troopers were advised the vehicle was stolen from the city of Utica.
All three juveniles were issued a Family Court Appearance Ticket and released to a legal guardian.
State Police were assisted at the scene by the DeWitt Police Department, Syracuse Police Department K9, and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, including AIR 1.
