On February 5, 2023, at approximately 6:45 a.m., troopers responded to 1998 County Route 67 in the town of Cairo in response to Greene County 911 call for a hit and run collision with two vehicles resulting in injuries.  Investigation revealed that a 2012 Kia was traveling northwest on County Route 67 in the town of Cairo when the operator of the vehicle stated that another vehicle, later identified as 2008 Volkswagen, traveling in the same direction, attempted to overtake the Kia  and while doing so struck the vehicle causing the Kia to leave the roadway and strike a ditch and damage a mailbox and mailbox post, and the lawn of the residence on County Route 67. There were two passengers in the vehicle, one passenger was injured with non-life-threatening injuries. The Volkswagen that struck the Kia fled the area. Troopers were able to obtain a license plate number and identified the vehicle. Troopers patrolled to a residence on Cornell Avenue in the town of Cairo and identified Jovan Quillie-Louise Pelton, age 24 as the operator of the vehicle. While speaking with Pelton, troopers determined that he struck the other vehicle and fled the area. He was subsequently charged with Criminal Mischief 2nd degree, a felony. He was also charged with Operator Leave Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, Reckless Endangerment 2nd degree, Reckless Endangerment-Property, all misdemeanors. He was also charged with Reckless Driving.
