Newburgh, NY – On September 14, 2021, at approximately 10:25 p.m., State Police stopped a vehicle on I-87 in the town of Newburgh for multiple vehicle and traffic violations.  While interviewing the driver, probable cause to search the vehicle was established.  The driver, Jimmie R. Merritt Jr., 38, of Albany, NY, was found to be in possession of over approximately 31 grams of cocaine.  Also located in the vehicle was a loaded Smith and Wesson M&P pistol loaded with 7 rounds of .40 caliber ammunition, along with additional .40 ammunition found inside a bag.  Further investigation revealed the gun was stolen, which was confirmed by the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office in Barnesville, GA. 

Merritt was taken into custody, transported, and processed at SP Newburgh where he was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree,  Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell 3rd degree; both Class B Felonies, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree (loaded Firearm other than in a person’s home/business); a Class C Felony, Criminal Possession of a Firearm and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th degree (firearm); both Class E Felonies. 

Merritt was virtually arraigned before the City of Newburgh Court and was remanded to Orange County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash or $30,000 bond.
