State Police in Princetown Arrest New Mexico Man in Murder For Hire Plot
 Major William S. Sprague
 Troop G Commander
(Princetown, NY - November 26, 2012)
State police in Princetown were contacted on Tuesday, 11/20/12, by the New Mexico State Police who advised that two subjects from Albuquerque had traveled to Vermont for the purpose of murdering two individuals in the St Albans area. St Albans is approximately six miles from the Canadian border. On Monday, 11/19/12, the subjects came in contact with US Custom agents at the Highgate Port of entry on the Canadian border. ICE officials determined that one of the subjects, MARK STAAKE, 41, was in violation of felony probation for Aggravated Burglary with a Deadly Weapon issued by the Second Judicial Court in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. STAAKE, who had been recently released from the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility in Las Cruces, NM, was taken into custody by federal authorities, and is awaiting extradition. The second subject was released.
After spending the night at a local hotel in the Albany area, troopers caught up with the second subject, TANNER D. RUANE (pictured), 23, at the Pilot Gas Station on Route 7 in Rotterdam. RUANE was taken to the Princetown barracks where he described his trip to Vermont with his uncle, MARK STAAKE, to purchase a car.

State Police in New Mexico forwarded a warrant for RUANE from District Court in Dona Ana County, New Mexico, for two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Murder in the First Degree, and two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon. Troopers arrested RUANE as a Fugitive from Justice. RUANE was arraigned in the Town of Princetown Court and remanded to the Schenectady County Jail without bail.
Troopers recovered tools and documents associated with the conspiracy while executing a search warrant on RUANE’s 1983 BMW.  The documents included the identities of the intended victims, their family members, and their whereabouts.
District Attorney Robert Carney, Schenectady County, is coordinating with New Mexico authorities the return of RUANE to their jurisdiction.
STAAKE, while at the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility, befriended DANA MARTIN, 45, who is currently serving two life sentences for the rape and murder of a fifteen year old girl in Barre, Vermont, on October 25, 2000. Information has been developed by the Vermont, New Mexico, and New York State Police that MARTIN may be involved in the disappearance of other victims throughout the United States. Their investigation is continuing. At this time, the information between MARTIN and the two potential victims in Vermont is guarded.
