East Fishkill, New York – On July 1, 2014 at approximately 1:00 p.m., State Police from the Stormville barracks charged Edward F. Lewis, 52 years old, of Hopewell Junction, New York, with Felony Driving While Intoxicated due to a previous conviction. Lewis was additionally charged with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st Degree, a Class E Felony, Resisting Arrest and Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, both Class A Misdemeanors.
Troopers were alerted of a possible intoxicated driver that was observed leaving the Sunoco Station on Route 52. The vehicle described to police was located a short time later and stopped after it was observed failing to maintain its lane of travel.
While interviewing the operator who was identified as Edward Lewis, Troopers observed clues that indicated Lewis was impaired. Lewis attempted to avoid arrest by leaving the traffic stop in his vehicle. He was able to travel approximately 2/10 of a mile before he was stopped by two State Police units. While Troopers were taking him into custody, Lewis actively resisted arrest.
Lewis provided a positive breath sample that yielded a Blood Alcohol Content of .30%, over three times the legal limit of intoxication. Lewis was arraigned before the town of East Fishkill Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $5000 cash bail.
