Major John H. Tibbitts Jr.
Troop B Commander
On March 23, 2017, at 6:16 p.m., Trooper David Hennessy, SP Schroon Lake, was traveling westbound on State Route 74 in the town of Schroon when he observed a 2012 Toyota Corolla being operated in an erratic manner. Trooper Hennessy stopped the vehicle and the operator did not have identification. While conducting checks on the operator and the vehicle, Trooper Hennessy established that the vehicle had been reported stolen from South Burlington, Vermont. Before he could be taken into custody, the operator fled westbound on State Route 74 with Trooper Hennessy in pursuit. Troopers Daniel J. Albee, Leston W. Sheeley and Paul W. Hill, assisted in the pursuit as the vehicle continued toward State Route 9. The suspect vehicle struck the rear of one of the troop cars and also side swiped another troop car before being forced off the south shoulder of the highway where the vehicle struck a guiderail, terminating the pursuit. Troopers took the operator into custody without further incident.
The Schroon Lake Fire Department and EMS responded to the scene. Trooper Albee and Trooper Sheeley were transported to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga by Schroon Lake EMS for minor injuries, and were treated and released. The defendant was also transported to Moses-Ludington Hospital for an evaluation and was discharged from the hospital with no apparent injury.
State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Troop B Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene. The stolen vehicle was impounded and will be processed at Troop B Headquarters in Ray Brook. The defendant initially provided a false name before identifying himself as Iliya J. Light, age 32, of North Hero, Vermont. State Police are working with Vermont authorities to verify his identification.
The defendant was arraigned before the Town of Schroon Court on the following charges and committed to the Essex County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond:
