Major David C. Candelaria
Troop L Commander

Press Release

On Saturday, March 25, 2017 at approximately 3:05am, troopers from the Valley Stream barracks were dispatched to a car fire on the Loop Parkway west of the Meadowbrook Parkway in the Town of Hempstead. Upon their arrival at the scene, members of the Point Lookout Fire Department were extinguishing a fully engulfed Chevy Aveo. The investigation at the scene indicated that the Chevy drove off the roadway and struck small trees and brush resulting in damage that caused the vehicle to ignite. The operator and sole occupant of the Chevy was located uninjured walking away from the scene on the Loop Parkway. While interviewing the operator, Ramon Cairo, age 30 of Queens Village, NY, it was determined that he had been operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs. He admitted to earlier stealing the Chevy from the parking lot at Northwell – LIJ, 2000 Marcus Blvd., Lake Success, NY.

Cairo was arrested and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Grand Larceny 4th Degree (Felony) and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree (Felony). He was held and will be arraigned in Nassau County District on March 26, 2017.
