Major David C. Candelaria
Troop L Commander

Press Release

On Sunday, July 16, 2017, the New York State Police, Troop L, conducted an aggressive driving enforcement operation on the Ocean Parkway and Robert Moses Causeway, in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County.  This enforcement operation was to address the on-going issue of speeding vehicles and aggressive drivers operating on these roadways.

At approximately 9:35 am, a trooper observed a 2005 Honda VTX motorcycle, on the southbound Robert Moses Causeway, driving in between traffic on the broken lane lines, south of the main span bridge. When the trooper attempted to stop the motorcycle for this violation, the operator began to speed away at speeds up to 110 MPH, in an attempt to flee from the trooper. The trooper continued to pursue the motorcycle, which exited the causeway, changed directions, and began traveling northbound. Through a coordinated effort of multiple enforcement tactics, troopers were able to stop the motorcycle. The operator, who was identified as Felix O. Rivera, age 34, of Bay Shore, NY, was quickly apprehended and arrested by the troopers. Major David Candelaria, Troop L Commander, stated, “The New York State Police will continue to target aggressive driving, with an emphasis on motorcycle enforcement. We have zero tolerance for aggressive drivers who endanger other motorists by their reckless actions.”
Mr. Rivera was charged with Unlawful Fleeing of a Police Officer 3rd (A Misd.), Reckless Endangerment 2nd (A Misd.), Unlawful Possession of Marijuana (Violation), and multiple traffic violations. Mr. Rivera will appear in the Suffolk County First District Court on July 26, 2017 at 9:00 am.
