Motorcycle Accident With Bay Constable's Vehicle Leads To DWI Arrest

Major David C. Candelaria
Troop L Commander

Press Release

On Sunday, July 23, 2017, a Brentwood trooper was investigating a two-car property damage auto accident, on the right shoulder of the westbound Ocean Parkway, east of Gilgo Beach. A Babylon Town Bay Constable was assisting the trooper with the accident, and parked his 2013 Ford F-150 pick-up truck, behind the trooper's vehicle, on the right shoulder. At approximately 9:00 pm, a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle, operated by John Vlismas, age 51, of Massapequa Park, NY, was traveling in the right lane of the westbound Ocean Parkway, and was approaching the accident scene. As Mr. Vlismas passed the Bay Constable's parked vehicle, he struck the driver's side view mirror, causing him to lose control of the motorcycle, and was subsequently ejected. Mr. Vlismas was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with multiple, non-life threatening injuries. Further investigation revealed that Mr. Vlismas was intoxicated at the time of the accident and was subsequently arrested for DWI.

Mr. Vlismas was charged with Driving While Intoxicated (Misd.), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 3rd (Misd.) and multiple traffic violations. Mr. Vlismas is scheduled to appear at Suffolk County First District Court on 08/11/17 at 9:00 am.
