On January 26, 2018, at approximately 8:32 p.m. State Police responded to a report of a one-car crash on Silver Hill Road in the town of Moriah.
An investigation at the scene revealed that a 2006 Mazda 6, driven by Kyle M. Stockwell, 21, of Moriah, was traveling west on Silver Hill Road, with Jessup C. Calkins, 23, of Lewis, as a front seat passenger. Upon cresting a rise in the roadway, Stockwell lost control of the vehicle and ran off the north shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle struck several trees and then a large boulder. The vehicle continued back into the roadway coming to rest in the middle of the road facing north. The engine, which separated from the vehicle, landed approximately 50 feet away.
Calkins was initially transported to Elizabethtown Community Hospital and then later transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont for treatment of multiple thoracic vertebrae fractures.
Stockwell was pronounced deceased at the scene by Essex County Coroner Kellie Valentine. Valentine authorized removal of the body to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake where an autopsy is to be performed.
State Police were assisted by the Moriah Police Department.
