State Police investigate an assault in Altona

On January 26, 2018, at approximately 12:30 a.m., State Police responded to a residence on Plank Road in the town of Altona, for a report of a stabbing.  The victim, a 39-year-old male reported that three subjects showed up to his residence.  When he exited the residence to confront the men, one of the subjects who he identified as Osbourne Smith, 38, of Champlain, was standing in front of the residence holding a bottle when a second subject began stabbing the victim.  Smith then struck the victim in the head with the bottle. The assault continued as the victims and assailants fell to the ground. The suspects then fled the scene in a pickup truck. 

The victim was able to get back inside his residence and call 911.  The victim was transported to the University of Vermont Health Network at the Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh, where he was diagnosed with multiple stab wounds to his chest and back, a collapsed lung, and multiple bruises and contusions.  The victim was admitted to the hospital in serious but stable condition.   

Later that day, Smith was located and arrested for Gang Assault 1st degree (B Felony) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree (D Felony).  He was arraigned in the Town of Chazy Court and remanded to the Clinton County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail, or $30,000 bond.   

On January 29, 2018, another suspect, Logan C. Guastella, 17, of Altona, was located and arrested. Guastella was charged with Assault 1st degree (B Felony) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th degree (A Misdemeanor). He was arraigned in the Town of Saranac Court and remanded to the Clinton County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, or $50,000 bond.  

Several search warrants were executed during the course of the investigation.  State Police were assisted by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Adirondack Drug Task Force and the North Country Crime Analysis Center.  The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact the New York State Police at (518)563-3761.
