Man from Nichols arrested for felony DWI and several other charges

(Nichols NY – February 26, 2018) On February 24, 2018, at 12:15 a.m., New York State Police at arrested Vernon T. Smith, age 35, from Nichols NY for the felony of Driving While Intoxicated with a B.A.C. result of .10%, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st degree, the misdemeanor of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree, the violation of Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, and several other traffic violations.
This arrest occurred after Smith was stopped as the result of a DWI checkpoint on West River Road in the town of Nichols. An investigation determined that he was driving while intoxicated and had a suspended NYS license. Smith’s DWI arrest was a felony because he has a prior conviction for DWI within the last 10 years. Also, he was found to unlawfully possess small quantities of marijuana and methamphetamine.
Smith was arraigned in the town of Nichols Court and was remanded to the Tioga County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 property bond. His next court in the town of Nichols is on March 1, 2018.
