Update on fatal fire in East Durham, NY

UPDATE:  State Police are continuing their investigation into the fatal structure fire that occurred on April 2, 2018 at 6:37 a.m. The scene has been processed by State Police in conjunction with Fire Investigators from the Office of Fire Prevention and Control and The Greene County Fire Investigation Team.

Investigators were on the scene of the two story, single family structure for 17 hours. The surviving occupant, John Mamanno, age 34, remains in Critical Condition suffering from burns to his face, hands and arm. The other victims, who perished inside the house were identified as Mammano’s children, Sophia Mammano, age 7, Jayden Caffrey, age 8 and Jonathen Mammano, age 10. Mammano’s parents: Nicholas Mammano, age 68, and Mary Mammano, age 68, also died in the fire. State Police were assisted at the scene by The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, The town of Durham Police Dept and The East Durham Fire Dept. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and State Police are asking anyone with information to call 518-622-8600.

The New York State Police at Catskill are investigating a fatal residential structure fire on State Route 145 in the town of Durham.

Five subjects are confirmed deceased at the scene and one person was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in critical condition. The victims identities cannot be confirmed at this time and the cause of deaths are pending autopsies. The cause of the fire is still currently under investigation.

The New York State police were assisted at the scene by the Greene County Sheriffs Office, Durham Police Department, New York State Fire, East Durham FD, Oak Hill FD, Freehold FD, Cario FD, Durham ambulance and Greene County paramedics.
