On April 10, 2018, State Police arrested 29-year-old Allan M. Brassard of Ellenburg following a burglary investigation which was reported on March 30, 2018, at approximately 10:42 p.m.
State Police responded to a residence on Military Turnpike in Altona in regards to a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, the homeowners advised patrols that Brassard, a tenant of theirs, had forced entry into the front door of their residence and shut himself in a back bedroom. He then had broken out through the window in the rear bedroom and left the residence. Brassard’s shoes were located in the yard of the residence, and blood was found in a snow bank.
Shortly after the break-in was reported, a one-car pedestrian accident was reported near the residence. The pedestrian, who matched Brassard’s description, was reported as fleeing the scene after being struck by a car. Following a ground search involving State Police K-9, troopers were met with negative results in locating Brassard.
Later that night at approximately 12:42 a.m., another one-car crash was reported on Military Turnpike in Ellenburg. Clinton County Sheriff's deputies responded and identified Brassard as the operator of the vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Trail Blazer. An investigation revealed that while traveling westbound on Military Turnpike, at a high rate of speed, Brassard, the operator and sole occupant, exited the roadway off the north shoulder and struck two signposts, a flower barrel, and a flatbed trailer. Law enforcement discovered that Brassard had stolen the vehicle from another residence on Military Turnpike and that he was attempting to flee the area.
Brassard was transported to University of Vermont Health Network at the Champlain Valley Physician's Hospital in Plattsburgh, and then later to University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont, for fractured vertebra in his neck and back, as well as a broken nose and broken sternum.
Following Brassard’s release from the hospital, he was charged with Burglary 2nd degree, Grand Larceny 4th degree and DWI. He was arraigned in the Town of Altona Court where he was released on his own recognizance to reappear in the Town of Altona Court on April 17, 2018, at 7:00 pm.
