Man from Greene arrested on multiple felony charges

(Oxford, NY – April 12, 2018) – New York State Police at Norwich arrested a 21-year-old man on April 6, 2018 at approximately 12:02 a.m. for numerous charges following his involvement in a domestic incident. Joshua R. Backus, age 21 of Greene, NY was charged with the felonies of Burglary in the 2nd degree, Criminal Possession of a Stimulant and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd degree. He was also charged with the misdemeanors of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree, four counts of Menacing in the 2nd degree and the violations of Harassment in the 2nd degree and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana.
Troopers were called to a residence in the Town of Oxford to investigate a domestic dispute. During their investigation, Backus pushed two subjects and threatened them with a hammer. He also pointed a gun at them and attempted to hit them with his vehicle as he left prior to patrols arriving. It was later discovered that Backus also entered the residence without permission and with the intent to commit a crime.
While conducting the investigation, Troopers observed Backus drive by the residence. Troopers stopped Backus on Town Barn Road in the Town of Oxford. Further investigation resulted in the seizure of a gun, a hammer, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and pills from inside the vehicle.
Backus was arraigned in the town of Oxford Court and remanded to the Chenango County Jail on $40,000 cash bail or $80,000 bond. The case is scheduled to be presented to the Chenango County Grand Jury on April 18, 2018.
