State Police investigate fatal crash on the Meadowbrook State Parkway

At 11:42 a.m. on Friday, June 8, New York State Police responded to a serious personal injury crash in the southbound lanes of the Meadowbrook State Parkway south of exit M9 in the town of Hempstead. Upon arrival, troopers discovered that a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer with ten occupants had crashed and rolled over, ending up in the marshland on the side of the highway. Multiple occupants had been ejected from the vehicle, resulting in three fatalities.
Herbert Leo Aviles Maravilla, age 16; Marlon Carbajal, age 15; and David Sanchez, age 13, all of Uniondale, were killed in the crash.
The operator of the vehicle, Cindy Sanchez, age 15, and the remaining occupants; Diego Aviles Maravilla, age 15, Mayela Flores, age 15, Kevin Robles, age 16, Lisbeth Menjivar, age 16, Walter Ochoa, age 17, and Gael Sanchez, age 18 months, all of Uniondale, suffered minor injuries.
The preliminary investigation had determined that the vehicle was stolen, and excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash. Charges are pending.
