State Police investigate a death in Gouverneur

On October 2, 2018, at approximately 11 a.m., State Police responded the Empire State Mines, located at 408 Sylvia Lake Road in Gouverneur, regarding an accident that occurred underground . Investigation revealed that a gas explosion occurred at approximately 3,800 feet underground, where a miner, Brendan P. Demasters, 40, of Middleburgh Heights, Ohio, was working. Demasters was immediately transported to the surface to awaiting EMS personnel from Gouverneur Rescue. Demasters was then transported to Gouverneur Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 12:33 pm, by Dr. Michael Kiger. St. Lawrence County Coroner Joseph White authorized the removal of the body to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where an autopsy was performed by Jefferson County Medical Examiner , Dr. Samuel Livingstone on October 3, 2018. Dr. Livingstone determined the cause of death to be cervical vertebra fractured due to blunt force trauma. The manner of death was ruled accidental by St. Lawrence County Coroner Joseph White.
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MHSA) is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
