Drug-impaired driver crashes into troop car

On Monday evening, a State Trooper was involved in a two-car crash on Western Avenue in Guilderland. The trooper was stopped for a red traffic light at the intersection of Schoolhouse Road when a 2016 Ford Fusion, operated by 21-year-old Joshua Maxwell-Tew, sideswiped the troop car. Maxwell-Tew, of Guilderland, was evaluated by a State Police Drug Recognition Expert and found to be impaired. He was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Maxwell-Tew was also found with Xanax, which contains the Schedule IV depressant, Alprazolam. He was additionally charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree. The passenger, 20-year-old Zachary Bemis, of Altamont, for found with Xanax and marihuana and was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Both men were scheduled for appearances in the Guilderland Town Court on October 25th.
The trooper was not injured in the collision.
