Syracuse Man arrested following traffic pursuit

  Major Philip T. Rougeux
  Troop D Commander

On October 19, 2018, at approximately 10:46 pm, Troopers assigned to the “Syracuse Initiative” in the city of Syracuse, observed a Dodge Caravan fail to keep right on Tallman Street.  A traffic stop was initiated, and while interviewing the driver and sole occupant, Steven Cruz, Troopers observed drugs in the vehicle's center console.

Troopers then opened the driver's door and asked Cruz to exit the vehicle, however he refused to exit the vehicle and drove off causing the door to slam on the Trooper’s left arm.  Troopers, along with Syracuse Police units, then continued to follow the vehicle down several city streets. Cruz then stopped the vehicle in the middle of Gordon Avenue, and fled on foot.  He then entered his residence at 114 Gordon Avenue and was subsequently located hiding in the attic by Troopers and the Syracuse Police Department.

Steven Cruz, age 25, who actively resisted, was taken into custody after a brief struggle and was transported to SP North Syracuse where he was processed on the following charges:
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree (class “A” misdemeanor)
  • Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree (class “A” misdemeanor)
  • Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd degree (class “A misdemeanor)
  • Resisting Arrest (class “A” misdemeanor)
  • Reckless Driving (unclassified misdemeanor)
  • Unlicensed Operation
Cruz was transported to the Onondaga County Justice Center for pending arraignment in the City of Syracuse Court.
The Trooper was transported to Upstate Medical Center by State Police where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
