State Police are investigating a one-car crash that occurred Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at the intersection of County Route 41 and County Route 40 in the town of Wilna, Jefferson County.
Investigation revealed, at approximately 2 p.m., a 1989 Jeep, operated by David C. Baker, age 22, from Carthage, NY was traveling southbound on County Route 41 when he exited the roadway on the western shoulder and struck a steel wheel driveway marker. The driver’s side door then fell off the vehicle. The Jeep continued off the roadway and side swiped a national grid utility pole and a New York State "share the road" traffic sign before re-entering the roadway. The vehicle continued another 2.8 miles southbound on County Route 41 and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of County Route 40. The vehicle then drove through the intersection across County Route 40 and struck an earth embankment.
Baker was ejected from the vehicle before it came to rest approximately 130 feet off the roadway. He was transported by Fort Drum Helicopter to Samaritan Medical Center and was listed in critical condition.
The investigation is continuing.
