NYSP Lieutenant recieves Community Hero Award

Lieutenant Michael Garrett was presented with a Community Hero Award by Bassett Healthcare Network. Lt. Garrett responded to a 911 call of a 70-year-old woman who had collapsed in the lobby of the Richfield Springs post office and was in cardiac arrest. Civilians on scene had already begun CPR moments before the Lieutenant and another trooper arrived. Lt. Garrett used an automated external defibrillator (AED) and the shock successfully restarted the patient’s heart and she was rushed to Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown where the team in the emergency department took over. The woman was up and talking later that day.
(Village of Richfield Springs, NY – November 2, 2018) – A woman who suffered cardiac arrest is expected to survive after the quick actions of New York State Troopers and a citizen.
On November 2, 2018 a trooper stationed at Richfield Springs was dispatched to a report of a 70-year-old woman who had collapsed in the lobby of the Richfield Springs Post Office on Main Street. She was unresponsive when the trooper arrived and a citizen was already performing CPR.
A New York State Police Lieutenant and the trooper attached a division issued Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and administered two shocks. When Richfield Springs EMS arrived, they took over the woman’s care and transported her to Basset Hospital in Cooperstown. The AED remained attached and delivered several more shocks.
The woman regained consciousness at the hospital and is expected to recover.
