Amsterdam man facing drug charges after fleeing from police

PRESS RELEASE

On February 5, 2019 State Police in Fonda arrested 25-year-old Eric L. Sumpter, of Amsterdam, for Criminal Possession of Marihuana 4th degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th degree, Attempted Burglary 2nd degree, and Resisting Arrest.
 
 Shortly before 2:00 p.m. on February 5, 2019 Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle in the city of Amsterdam for a vehicle and traffic infraction. The vehicle operator, later identified as Eric Sumpter, failed to comply and a pursuit was initiated. Troopers pursued Sumpter a short distance before he lost control, striking a snowbank and road sign, disabling his vehicle. Sumpter exited and fled on foot, Troopers gave chase before catching up to Sumpter as he broke a window, attempting to make entry into a residence. Troopers were able to place Sumpter in custody after a brief struggle and he was found to be in possession of a quantity of cocaine and marihuana. He was subsequently charged with Criminal Possession of Marihuana 4th degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 4th degree, Attempted Burglary 2nd degree, and Resisting Arrest.
 
Sumpter was arraign in Amsterdam City Court and remanded to Montgomery County Jail without bail.
