On February 9, 2019, at approximately 6:09 p.m., State Police conducted a traffic stop on a known suspended operator on State Route 22 in the town of Plattsburgh. 48-year-old Ernest B. Dockum of Jay, was stopped in a 2005 Chevrolet Trail Blazer on State Route 22, just north of SP Plattsburgh. As troopers approached the vehicle, Dockum put his vehicle in gear and made an abrupt U-turn and headed south on State Route 22. Dockum reached a high rate of speed on State Route 22, passing multiple vehicles and forcing other vehicles off the roadway. The pursuit continued into the town of Peru and was quickly discontinued by State Police for safety reasons.
Troopers located Dockum’s abandoned vehicle on Clintonville Road in the town of Ausable at the beginning of a trail head. A K-9 track was conducted by State Police and members of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, tracking approximately 3/4 of a mile before locating Dockum. Dockum was given several commands to stop and he continued to flee. A State Police K9 was released, resulting in Dockum’s apprehension. He was taken into custody without further incident. Dockum sustained puncture wounds to his left ear, neck, chest and back side. He was transported to the University of Vermont Healthcare Network at the Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh for treatment.
Following his release, Dockum was charged with Reckless Endangerment 1st degree, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Possession of Marihuana 5th degree, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 1st degree, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 2nd degree, Unlawfully Fleeing Police in a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving, Failure to Obey, Driving While Intoxicated as well as numerous vehicle and traffic offenses.
