On February 27, 2019, Troopers arrested Robert A. Brandel, 60 of North Tonawanda, NY for Scheme to Defraud 1st degree (E Felony) and Falsely Reporting an Incident 3rd degree (A Misd).
SP Lockport- On February 27, 2019 at 2:37 P.M., Troopers responded to 3949 Lockport-Olcott Road, Newfane, NY, Tops parking lot for a male found tied up in a vehicle. Troopers located the blue Ford F-150 parked with a single male occupant in the back seat with a rope tied around his neck attached to the head rest with his hands and ankles bound with duct tape. Troopers rescued the male identified as Robert Brandel and started a robbery, abduction case. Brandel’s vehicle was processed for possible suspect evidence while Troopers took a deposition from him.
Brandel claimed that on Monday, February 25, 2019, he picked up two males that were involved in his Super Bowl squares. Once they entered his vehicle one of the males brandished a pistol and took $16,000 cash he had from the Super Bowl squares. Brandel then claims they made him drive around Western New York at various places for two days against his will. Then they tied him up in the back seat of his vehicle and left him in the Tops parking lot Tuesday night.
Further investigation and interviews revealed that this elaborate story was fabricated because Brandel was running a $50,000 payout Super Bowl pool in which he made up names on some of the squares hoping to win and take most of the winnings. Brandel was unable to make the payouts and was short for most of the $50,000.
Brandel was taken to SP Lockport and processed. Brandel was issued appearance tickets for the town of Newfane Court returnable in March 2019.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted in this investigation.
