NEW YORK STATE POLICE
Major Paul E. Hogan
Troop NYC Commander
On Sunday, March 31, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Trooper Joshua Kaye, SP Staten Island, was on routine patrol on the lower level of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge when he saw a car stopped in the right lane. The driver of the vehicle got out and attempted to jump over a barrier and off the bridge. Trooper Kaye ran over to the man and held onto him. He was joined by two passersby, and they held the man until members of NYPD Emergency Services Unit arrived to help pull the man back onto the roadway.
Following the struggle, Trooper Kaye felt pain in his ribs and back, and was transported by troop car to Staten Island University Hospital, where he is currently being treated.
The man who attempted to jump from the bridge was transported to NYU-Langone Hospital Brooklyn for evaluation.
