On June 1, 2019, at approximately 9:13 a.m., State Police responded to a 911 report of a structure fire at 1158 Springfield Road in the town of Wilmington. The structure was a multi-unit dwelling. Preliminary information revealed that a subject was still inside one of the apartments. After the fire was extinguished, the subject was later found inside the building, deceased.
Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw arrived on scene and authorized removal of the victim’s body to the Albany Medical Center where an autopsy will be performed this afternoon.
The initial findings suggest a fire originated on the ground floor of the apartment building and spread throughout the two-story structure.
This investigation is continuing with the assistance of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, local, county, and state fire personnel. The identity of the victim, as well as the cause and origin of the fire, remain under investigation.
