Impaired driver arrested for possession of a stolen handgun following a traffic stop on the Thruway.

Albany, NY – On November 22, 2019, at approximately 10:30 p.m., State Police stopped a vehicle on I-87, at the exit 23 tolls, in the city of Albany, for a vehicle and traffic violation. The driver, Eric M. Oliver, 23, of Glenmont, NY, was found to be impaired by drugs. Troopers located a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson M&P handgun in the vehicle. The firearm was loaded with six rounds of ammunition. During the investigation it was determined that the firearm was reported stolen by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in North Carolina.
Oliver was taken into custody, transported and processed at SP Albany where he refused to submit to a chemical test or blood draw to determine the drug content in his system. He was subsequently charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree (Loaded Firearm other than in a person’s home/business); a Class C Felony, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th degree (Firearm); a Class E Felony, and Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs; an Unclassified Misdemeanor.
Oliver was arraigned before the City of Albany Court and remanded to the Albany County Jail in lieu of $40,000 cash bail or bond. He is scheduled to reappear on November 27, 2019.
