Fatal Fire Investigation in Lewis County

The New York State Police , in conjunction with the Village of Lowville Police Department , Lewis County Sheriff’s  Department, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the Lewis County District Attorney’s Office are continuing the investigation into the double fatal house fire that occurred at 7525 South State Street in the Village of Lowville on November 30, 2019.
 
The deceased victims have been identified as :
Catherine A. Crego, age 58, of 7525 South Street Apt # 2, Lowville, NY
Saratina R. Kilbourne, age 42, 7539 South State Street, Apt # 1, Lowville, NY
 
Autopsies were conducted at Albany Medical Center and both victims' cause of death has been listed as ”Asphyxia” as a consequence of smoke and heated products of combustion.
 
The surviving victim, Brian S. Mushtare, age 60, of 7525 South State Street Apt. # 3, Lowville, NY was treated for smoke inhalation, lacerations, and minor burns. He was treated at Lewis County General Hospital and has since been released.
 
The Investigative team is asking that anyone who has information regarding the fire or possibly has video of the fire contact the Village of Lowville Police Department, Officer Matthew Martin at 315-376-6511.

On November 30, 2019, at approximately 11:49 p.m., the Lowville Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 7525 South State Street in the village of Lowville. As fire personnel arrived on the scene, they immediately observed heavy fire conditions inside the residence.

The preliminary investigation has revealed, a male occupant was rescued from the front porch roof by members from the Lowville Fire Department and transported to Lewis County General Hospital with burns and smoke inhalation.   As fire personnel began a search of the residence, they located two adult bodies on the second-floor deceased.  
The New York State Police, along with the NYS Office of Fire Prevention & Control is assisting the village of Lowville Police Department with investigating the cause and origin of the fire.   

An autopsy is scheduled to confirm the official cause of death of both victims and to confirm their identity.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Lewis County Emergency Management and the Lewis County Origin and Cause Team are also assisting with the investigation. The Lowville Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Martinsburg, Castorland, and New Bremen Fire Departments.  

The investigation is continuing.
