On December 9, 2019, at approximately 6:50 a.m., State Police responded to State Route 11 in the town of Champlain for a report of a two-car motor vehicle crash. An investigation revealed a 2016 Chrysler, operated by Albert G. Gokey, 94, of Rouses Point, was traveling westbound on State Route 11 when he crossed the center line for an unknown reason, and struck a 2015 Volvo tractor with trailer which was traveling eastbound, operated by Ganesharajah Ratnasabapathy, 53, of Quebec, Canada. Gokey was pronounced deceased on scene. Essex County Coroner Francis Whitelaw responded to the scene and authorized removal of Gokey’s body to the University of Vermont Healthcare Network at the Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital in Plattsburgh for an autopsy scheduled for December 10, 2019.
Ratnasabapathy was not injured. The truck was leased by Speedy Transport Group, Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The trailer was loaded with over 44,000 pounds of polymeric beads and none were spilled as a result of the crash.
This crash remains under investigation.
