Leandra's Law Arrest in Riverhead

On March 11, 2017, at approximately 11:00 PM, a Riverside trooper while on patrol on Peconic Avenue, in Riverhead, NY, observed the operator of a 2000 Honda Accord not wearing his seatbelt. The trooper conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on the Honda and upon interviewing the operator, Luis A. Morales, age 29, of Riverhead, NY, the trooper detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Mr. Morales failed sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for DWI. Mr. Morales was traveling with a ten year old and a 12 year old child inside his vehicle.

The defendant was charged with Aggravated DWI (Leandra's Law, class E felony), two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child (A Misd.), and traffic violations. Mr. Morales was arraigned at Riverhead Town Court and was remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. The children were turned over to the custody of their mother.
