On March 13, 2017, at approximately 4:30 p.m. State Police responded to a report of a one-car crash in the area of Monument Falls on State Route 86 in the town of North Elba.

An investigation at the scene revealed that a 1994 Toyota Four Runner driven by 51-year-old Edward A. Yando of Wilmington, was traveling northeast on State Route 86, attempting to negotiate a curve in the roadway, when the vehicle lost control, drove into the oncoming lane, and ran off the west shoulder, striking a group of trees. The vehicle partially overturned onto the passenger’s side. Lake Placid and Wilmington Fire and Rescue responded and extricated Yando and his passenger, 17-year-old Jordan O. Yando, also of Wilmington. Jordan was transported to Adirondack Medical Center in Lake Placid for a leg injury. Edward was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake for a broken leg. This crash remains under investigation.

As a result of this investigation, a portion of State Route 86 was closed for approximately and hour and half. A surgeon traveling through the area at the time of the crash rendered medical assistance to both occupants until fire and rescue personnel could respond.
