On September 26 at about 8:30PM, New York State Troopers on patrol at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens noticed an unattended Ford pick-up truck left in front of Terminal 4 - Departures Area. When the driver, Eddie N. Sonpon, age 28, a Liberian national currently residing in Bristol, Pennsylvania, returned to his illegally parked vehicle, he was approached by the troopers and asked to produce identification. After Sonpon produced someone else's identification and then gave several different answers when asked about his identity, he was detained and questioned further. After additional investigation by the troopers, Sonpon revealed that he had a handgun inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic pistol, loaded with 14 rounds. Sonpon was arrested, the weapon was seized as evidence and his truck was impounded. He was brought to the New York Police Department's 113th Precinct. After consultation with the Queens County District Attorney, Sonpon was charged with two felony counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree and one felony count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree. After being processed at the 113th Precinct, he was subsequently transported to Queens Central Booking and held for arraignment in Queens Criminal Court.
State Police were assisted in their investigation by members of the New York Police Department and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department.
