Vehicle Pursuit Ends In Multiple Arrests

Major David C. Candelaria

Troop L Commander

On December 16, 2017, at approximately 12:50 pm, a trooper observed a 2018 Dodge Durango on the eastbound Northern State Parkway west of Veterans Highway, in the town of Smithtown, operating at a high rate of speed. The trooper attempted to initiate a vehicle and traffic stop, but the Durango failed to comply and began to flee. The trooper pursued the Durango until it collided with a 2016 Nissan Sentra at the intersection of Veterans Highway and Harned Road, becoming disabled. The driver and three passengers exited the Durango and fled the scene on foot. The Sentra was occupied by it's driver and front passenger, both of whom were treated for minor injuries and subsequently released.

With the assistance of the Suffolk Police County Police and NYS Environmental Conservation Police, troopers searched the vicinity, located the three passengers who fled and took them into custody. Investigation revealed that the Durango was stolen from a car dealership in Manhattan. Troopers are still actively attempting to locate the driver and ask if anyone witnessed this accident, please call the New York State Police Troop L Headquarters at 631-756-3300.

The two passengers arrested were identified as James Tafari, age 19, of Brooklyn, NY

and Anthony M. Alcindor-Louis, age 26, of Brooklyn, NY.

The third occupant was a 15 year old juvenile delinquent. All three occupants were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd degree (D-Felony) and Resisting Arrest (A-Misd). The two adult passengers will be lodged to await morning arraignment at Suffolk County First District Court. The juvenile was released on an appearance ticket returnable to Suffolk County Family Court.
