New York State Trooper struck by vehicle while assisting disabled motorist

Trooper Gallagher continues to be treated at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. There is no update on his condition at this time. Any updates will be posted on the Online Newsroom. 

State Police is asking any witnesses to the crash to contact SP Farmingdale at (631) 756-3300.


The State Police member injured after being struck by a vehicle on the LIE overpass ramp to the Sagtikos Parkway identified as Trooper Joseph J. Gallagher, age 35, who is assigned to Troop L, SP Brentwood.

Trooper Gallagher has been a member of the State Police since 2014, and has previously been assigned to Troop F and Troop T. 

Trooper Gallagher is out of surgery and listed in serious condition at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

On December 18, 2017, at approximately 2:30 p.m., a New York State Police Member was struck by a vehicle while assisting a disabled motorist on the overpass from the westbound Long Island Expressway to southbound Sagtikos Parkway.
The Trooper suffered serious injuries and was taken to Southside Hospital in Bayshore, where the member is listed in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.
The driver of the vehicle did stop at the scene; no charges have been filed in the crash.

The name of the member is being withheld at this time.
