State Police make arrest following vehicle pursuit

On October 8, 2019, at approximately 2:04 p.m. State Police conducted a traffic stop on a 2008 Honda Accord for traveling 90mph in a 65mph zone on Interstate 87, northbound near exit 34. Upon the trooper approaching the vehicle, the operator fled from the scene. State Police attempted to pursue the vehicle as it exited the interstate, speeding through the towns of Peru and AuSable. The vehicle came to a stop in the roadway on State Route 9 in the town of AuSable, and the operator fled on foot into the woods. A trooper who began to pursue the suspect on foot, instructed the suspect to stop fleeing. When the suspect refused to stop, the trooper released his K9 partner who engaged the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and treated for multiple bite wounds. He was identified as Justin R. Santiago, 28, of Staten Island, NY.
 
State Police also discovered two small children in the vehicle and a female passenger. Santiago was charged with Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree(misdemeanor), two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child (misdemeanor), Reckless Endangerment (misdemeanor), and Resisting Arrest (misdemeanor. Santiago was also issued numerous traffic citations.
 
He was arraigned in the Town of Peru Court on all charges and remanded to the Clinton County Court in lieu of $1,600 cash bail, or $3,200 bond.  Santiago is to reappear in the town courts of Peru, Ausable, and Chesterfield at later dates and times. 
 
The pursuit lasted approximately nine minutes and covered approximately 10 miles.
