On November 12, 2022, just before 9:00 PM, the State Police responded to crash on the westbound Southern State Parkway between exits 17 and 16, town of Hempstead, Nassau County.
Preliminary investigation revealed, a 2006 BMW M3, driven by Haynes Harris, 40 of Baldwin, NY, was traveling westbound on the Southern State Parkway when he struck a 2022 Chevy Equinox from behind. The collision caused both vehicles to leave the roadway onto the right shoulder.
The BMW struck the guiderail, overturned, and continued into a utility box. Harris was transported to NYU Langone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger of the BMW, Adrian Hall, 51 of New York, NY, was transported to NYU Langone Hospital in critical condition and later died of his injuries.
After being struck by the BMW, the Chevy’s momentum continued forward striking the guiderail. The sole occupant of the Chevy was transported to NYU Langone with non-life-threatening injuries.
Harris was arrested and charged with Manslaughter 2nd Degree a C – Felony, Vehicular Manslaughter 2nd Degree a D – Felony, Assault 2nd Degree a D – Felony, Reckless Endangerment 2nd an A – Misdemeanor and Reckless Driving and Driving While Intoxicated both unclassified Misdemeanors.
Harris will be arraigned today at Nassau County First District Court.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU), and Forensic Identification Unit (FIU) all responded to the scene to investigate.
