PRESS RELEASE

On July 20, 2019, at approximately 11:07 am, State Police Thruway on patrol observed a 2014 Kia Optima traveling westbound which was earlier dispatched as a “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) due to the operator being potentially suicidal. Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop by activating his emergency lights and siren but the Kia sped off and a pursuit was initiated. Patrols then observe the Kia swerve from the passing lane into the driving lane and intentionally strike an eastbound 2017 GMC SUV, causing both vehicles to spin out and exit the roadway, into the grass area off the south shoulder of the roadway. After the vehicles came to rest, the operator of the Kia, later identified as Tyron M Hooks-Harris, exited the Kia and went to the GMC where he opened the rear passenger side door and began slashing the passenger, Errington D. Renaud Jr, with a knife.
Troopers approached the vehicles and observed the suspect with the knife. Hooks-Harris complied with verbal commands and was taken into custody at gunpoint without further incident.
Occupants of the GMC were transported to Oneida Healthcare, where they were treated and released.
