PRESS RELEASE

New Rochelle, NY – On August 1, 2022, at approximately 3:00 p.m., State Police responded to a report of a two-car personal injury crash on I-95 in the city of New Rochelle.  A preliminary investigation determined a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound in the area of mile marker 7.0, when it was struck from behind by a 2022 BMW being operated by Angel Almonte, 26, of Bronx, NY.  It was reported that the BMW was observed traveling at an unsafe speed, making multiple unsafe lane changes, and following too closely prior to the crash.  The driver of the Volkswagen, Maria L. Miano, 53, of New Rochelle, NY, and a passenger in the vehicle, were both transported to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital for minor injuries.

During the crash investigation, Troopers on the scene observed Almonte throw what appeared to be a handgun over a fence along the right shoulder of the roadway.  Almonte was then detained and searched, which revealed he was in possession of approximately 20 grams of Ecstasy.  Upon locating the gun, it was determined to be a toy Glock with a black drum magazine.

Almonte was arrested and processed at SP New Rochelle where he was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree; a Class B Felony and Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd degree; a Class A Misdemeanor.  He was transported to New Rochelle Police Department to await his arraignment at the City of New Rochelle Court.
