Two people have been arrested after a dispute in the town of Harpersfield.

On August 14, 2020 New York State Police at Oneonta arrested Daniel I. Merwin, age 39 of Jefferson, NY for the felony of Assault in the first degree and the misdemeanors of Menacing in the second degree, Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Troopers also arrested Jeremy L. Chase, age 37 of Harpersfield, NY for the felony of Criminal Possession of a Weapon and the misdemeanors of Reckless Endangerment in the second degree, Menacing in the second degree and two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Troopers and Delaware County Sheriff’s were dispatched by Delaware County 911 to a dispute between neighbors on Austin Road in the town of Jefferson.  The 911 caller told dispatchers that a shot had also been fired by one of the individuals involved in the dispute.

An investigation revealed that an on-going dispute between neighbors became physical.  Merwin is accused of striking Chase with a wooden fence post.  Chase is accused retrieving a firearm and menacing Merwin with it, then shooting a round into the ground.  Merwin is accused of later returning to Chase’s property and using his vehicle to intentionally damage an electric fence.  The investigation also revealed that the altercation took place in the presence of children.

Both Merwin and Chase were arrested and transported to SP Oneonta for processing.

Both are scheduled to appear at the town of Harpersfield court on August 24, 2020 and were issued orders of protection to refrain from contact from one another.
