Several police agencies in Tompkins County joined forces on August 29, 2019 to crack down on motorists using their cellphone while driving.  The Distracted Driver Enforcement detail focused on distracted drivers within the city of Ithaca.  New York State Police, City of Ithaca Police and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department all took part.

A total of 38 tickets were issued within a four-hour time period.  The violations issued were:
  • Cellphone – 29
  • No Seatbelt – 3

Operating a cellphone, even if it’s on speaker and texting or using an electronic device is dangerous and illegal in New York.  If found guilty, a cellphone ticket can carry a hefty fine and will put 5 points on your license.
