On November 15, 2020 at approximately 2:30 p.m., state police in Montgomery observed a white 2015 Mazda CX-5 with a Georgia license plate traveling on Interstate 84 in the town of Montgomery at a high rate of speed. Troopers initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to comply and went through a u-turn on 84 and began heading west. The vehicle then entered State Route 17 west. While attempting to elude troopers, the Mazda sideswiped a 2002 Toyota Camry, causing the Mazda to overturn near exit 119. Troopers took the operator of the vehicle, Chandler Riggin, age 21 of Middletown and his passenger Brittany Tobin, age 22 of Greenville (Orange County) into custody. Neither were injured in the crash. The passenger of the Toyota was not injured. Riggin was issued 45 vehicle and traffic law tickets to include speeding, driving on the shoulder, failure to comply and other violations.
 
Riggin was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree, Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Flee a Police Officer 3rd degree, Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving, Criminal Contempt 2nd degree, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operator 3rd, degree, all misdemeanors. Tobin was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree, Obstruction of Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest. Both were arraigned in the Montgomery Town Court and released on appearance tickets.
