NEW YORK STATE POLICE
Major Michael S. TenEyck
Troop D Commander
On Sunday, June 5, 2022, at 11:30 a.m., A State Trooper’s marked patrol vehicle was struck on I-81 in the town of Cicero. Trooper Matthew Young was out of the vehicle removing debris that was obstructing traffic in the center lane when a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Jonathan D. Bumpus, age 37 from Cortland, NY failed to see the patrol vehicle with its lights activated and struck the rear of the car. Bumpus was transported to Upstate University Hospital with minor injuries. He was issued traffic tickets for Speeding, and Failure to Exercise Due Care when Passing a Stopped Emergency Vehicle. Trooper Young was not injured in the crash.
The New York State Police would like to remind motorists to please remember to obey the Slow Down, Move Over law. When you see police vehicles, emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or any incident on the roadway, we ask that you slow down, and when it’s safe, move over to the other lane. These types of crashes are becoming more frequent and can be avoided if drivers slow down and move over to give us room to work safely.
State Police were assisted at the scene by Cicero Fire Department.
