New State Police-NYS Department of Transportation facility now open in Champlain

The New York State Police and the New York State Department of Transportation today announced the opening of the New York State Police-New York State Department of Transportation patrol and commercial vehicle inspection facility located 2,500 feet south of the NYS/Canadian International border at exit 43 of I-87/Northway, in Champlain, NY. In addition to housing the new SP Champlain station, the complex includes NYSDOT commercial vehicle enforcement staff, along with a state-of-the-art commercial vehicle inspection station and large paved lot designed to accommodate all required commercial vehicle enforcement activities. The $12 million facility was constructed by the Department of Transportation, which assumed 100 percent of the capital construction costs.

State Police Troop B Commander Major Rueben A. Oliver said, “This new facility is the result of our continued close partnership with NYSDOT, and helps us maintain highway safety, enhance security at the Champlain border crossing, and ensure that Troopers can respond rapidly to incidents throughout this area of Clinton County. I commend DOT and our members for working together to improve the safety and security of the entire region.”

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said: “This new, state-of-the-art facility will bolster DOT’s robust commercial vehicle safety enforcement program and help us keep dangerous vehicles off the road, enhancing safety for all motorists. It will also help to ensure that the vital flow of goods and commerce coming across the U.S.-Canadian border continues with minimal delays and in full compliance with state and federal regulations. The Department of Transportation was proud to partner with the State Police to make this new facility a reality.”

The new complex features a 6,000 square foot operations building, which will include the new State Police station and offices for the NYSDOT. In addition, there is a separate 4,600 square foot enclosed truck inspection garage which represents the first permanent state-owned facility in NYS dedicated to commercial vehicle safety enforcement. On-site capabilities include the use of weigh-in-motion screening technology, access to the latest driver and vehicle safety data and the ability to perform enhanced, garage-based inspections under all weather conditions.  The expanded enforcement capabilities supported by these facilities will allow more efficient inspection of commercial vehicles, improve highway safety and enhance the flow of trade across the U.S.- Canada border.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Program represents one of NYSDOT’s core missions to enhance highway safety and reduce crashes on New York’s roadways.  The Department’s truck and bus roadside inspections are the foundation for the commercial vehicle safety enforcement program.  This program removes unsafe commercial drivers and vehicles from the roadways by conducting comprehensive roadside driver and vehicle inspections throughout the state.  These inspections are conducted by federally certified NYSDOT inspectors and investigators, NYS Troopers, and 37 partner local police departments.  Results of these inspections help NYSDOT to prioritize safety interventions within the commercial truck and bus industries.  These interventions include conducting wide-ranging safety investigations and taking enforcement actions on carriers who do not maintain high safety standards.

The new SP Champlain will be a full-service State Police station, replacing SP Chazy, which was located on Route 9 in Chazy. SP Champlain will operate 24x7, and will include both uniform members and members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The address for SP Champlain is 116 West Service Road, Champlain, NY.
