PRESS RELEASE

On October 4, 2021, the Sag Harbor Police Department received a report from the North Plainfield, New Jersey Police Department, that a woman, Masany Cruz, 29, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was reported missing to their department and may be at the Sag Harbor Inn. When Sag Harbor Police arrived at the Inn, they located the husband of the missing person, William Cruz, 31, of Colorado Springs, CO, alone at the Inn. Cruz was taken into custody without incident and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

At the same time, police in Colorado Springs responded to the last known address of Masany and William Cruz, where Masany Cruz was found dead. A multi-state investigation began, with a joint effort between New York State Police and Sag Harbor Police, in coordination with North Plainfield PD, and Colorado Springs PD. Search warrants were executed in Colorado and Sag Harbor.

Investigators in several jurisdictions continued to pursue numerous leads and collected evidence to obtain an arrest warrant in Colorado. The investigation determined Masany Cruz had not been heard from since approximately September 14, 2021.

The investigation determined that William Cruz left Colorado on, or about September 15, 2021, and arrived on Long Island on September 18, 2021.

After a thorough investigation, on October 13, 2021, William Cruz was arrested by New York State Police investigators as a fugitive from justice, based on an arrest warrant out of District County Court in El Paso County, CO.

Cruz was processed at the New York State Police Barracks in Riverside and held at the Southampton Town PD for arraignment on October 14, 2021, at Suffolk County First District Court.

Agencies involved in the investigation include the New York State Police SP Riverside Bureau of Criminal of Investigation, Major Crimes Unit, and Forensic Identification Unit, the Sag Harbor Police Department, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, North Plainfield Police Department, and Colorado Springs Police Department.
