On April 17, 2021 New York State Police arrested Matthew R. Bonser, age 29 of Nanticoke, PA for the felonies of Assault in the first degree, Burglary in the first degree and Robbery in the first degree. He is additionally charged as Fugitive for Justice after it was learned that he is wanted in the State of Pennsylvania.
On April 17, 2021 shortly before 2 p.m., New York State Police responded to a violent altercation at a residence on Ellerson Road in the Town of Barker.
When troopers arrived on scene, they learned that an unknown man broke into a residence with two people inside. The unknown man was confronted by a 71-year-old male, resulting in a violent attack. The 71-year-old suffered injuries that are considered to be non-life-threatening. He was transported to Wilson Hospital.
The suspect, (later identified as Bonser) fled the scene and ran to a nearby residence on State Route 11 and threated a victim with a knife to obtain car keys. Bonser fled the area in the stolen vehicle.
A Broome County Deputy spotted the stolen vehicle and a pursuit was initiated. Troopers then spotted the vehicle at a high rate of speed on Interstate 81 and a pursuit was initiated with State Police. The vehicle exited the Interstate at exit 3 and traveled on local roads before crashing into an uninvolved vehicle and a light pole on Colesville Road near Interstate 81. Bonser was taken into custody and transported to Wilson Hospital for medical treatment.
The person in the vehicle that was struck on Colesville Road is identified as an 87-year-old male. He was transported by ambulance to Wilson Hospital.
Bonser was processed at SP Binghamton after his release from Wilson Hospital and later transported to Broome County Central Arraignment and Processing.
The incident remains under investigation by members of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
