PRESS RELEASE
 
Update: The victim is identified as 18-year-old Nicholas J. Russell, of Smyrna, NY.  Russell and three friends were swimming in the Chenango River when he began to have difficulty staying above water.  A witness attempted to assist Russell but he went under water and never re-surfaced.  Russell’s body was located by the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team.  The medical examiner responded to the scene and Russell’s body was transported to a local funeral home.  Russell’s next of kin was notified. 
 
Update: Shortly before 8:00 p.m., the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team located the victim.  The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.  No information will be released about the victim pending family notification. 
 
Original Release:

New York State Police, the village of Sherburne Police Department, Chenango County Bureau of Fire and Sherburne Fire and North Norwich Fire are at the Chenango River near State Route 80 and County Route 23 in the village of Sherburne. 

Just after 5 p.m., New York State Police at Norwich responded to a report of a person in the Chenango River that went underwater and had not resurfaced.  The New York State Underwater Recovery Team and divers and an air boat from the Chenango County Bureau of Fire are searching the river and the area surrounding it. 

Details limited due to respect for the victim’s family.  More information will be released as it becomes available.
