Cornwall, NY – On May 8, 2020, at approximately 3:00 a.m., State Police stopped a car on I-87 in the town of Cornwall for multiple vehicle and traffic violations. While interviewing the driver, probable cause to search the vehicle and the occupants was established. The driver, Rebecca F. Austin, 29, of Greenville, NY, was found to be in possession of approximately 2.5 grams of heroin.
The passenger, Alejanro J. Leon, 30, of Leeds, NY, initially gave a false name, was found to be in possession of approximately 22 grams of heroin. Leon attempted to flee the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by the Troopers and taken into custody.
The pair were transported and processed at SP Newburgh. Austin was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree; a Class A misdemeanor and several traffic violations. She was released with an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Cornwall Court on June 10, 2020 at 4:00 p.m.
Leon was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell 3rd degree; both Class B Felonies and Tampering with Physical Evidence (attempting to conceal, alter, or destroy evidence); a Class E Felony. He was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest, Criminal Impersonation 2nd degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd degree, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th degree; all Class A Misdemeanors.
Leon was arraigned before a County Court Judge via Skype and was remanded to Orange County Jail. A return court date is not available at this time.
