On August 29, 2020, at approximately 4:10 p.m. State Police responded to a report of a two-car crash on State Route 22 in Peru. An investigation at the scene revealed that a 2019 Lincoln MKX operated by 57-year-old Elizabeth H. Matzel of Jay, struck a 2016 Subaru Forester operated by 53-year-old Kathleen G. Squire of Peru while she was backing in the parking lot of Topps.
No damage was incurred to either vehicle. However, Matzel was subsequently arrested for DWI. She initially refused to be taken into custody and physically resisted handcuffs being placed on her. She also refused to submit to field testing and breath testing to determine the alcohol content of her blood. She was charged with DWI and Resisting arrest. Matzel was arraigned by the Mooers Town Court and released to reappear in the Peru Town Court at a later date.
