Coxsackie, NY – On May 2, 2020, at approximately 3:00 p.m., State Police attempted to stop a 2004 Honda Accord on I-87 for speeding, 101 mph in a posted 65 mph zone. The driver failed to comply and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle exited the Thruway at the Coxsackie exit and continued north on State Route 9W where the driver slowed down and exited the vehicle from the passenger side door while it was still in motion. The unoccupied Honda then struck a guide rail.
The driver, who was later identified as Shavar Campbell, 34, of Cambria Heights, NY, immediately approached the State Trooper where a physical struggle began. Campbell started to flee on foot when the Trooper deployed his taser to eventually gain compliance and take him into custody.
Further investigation revealed a loaded Comanche .357 Magnum pistol, which was later confirmed stolen, approximately 44 grams of crack cocaine, and nearly 2 ounces of marijuana were located inside the vehicle. Campbell was also found to be in possession of razor blades while being taken into custody.
Campbell was transported to Albany Medical Center for minor injuries and when released, he was processed at SP Albany. He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree; a Class B Felony, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell 3rd degree; a Class B Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree (Loaded Firearm Other than in a Person’s Home); a Class C Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree (previous conviction); a Class D Felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree (Possession of a Firearm Previous Conviction); a Class D Felony, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property (Firearm) 4th degree; a Class E Felony, Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia 2nd degree; a Class A Misdemeanor, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd degree; a Class A Misdemeanor, and Resisting Arrest; a Class A Misdemeanor.
Campbell was arraigned before the Town of Coxsackie Court via Skype and remanded to the Greene County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond. A return court date is not available at this time.
