PRESS RELEASE

Stafford, NY – On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at approximately 5:30 p.m., State Police investigated a serious crash on I-90 eastbound, in the town of Stafford, Genesee County.

The crash occurred in the area of mile marker 383.7 where traffic was backed up due to an unrelated accident investigation.

The driver of a 2016 Ryder Truck Rental tractor trailer, Christopher M. Schultz, 61, of Derby, NY, failed to stop when approaching the stopped traffic and rear ended a tractor trailer in front of him.  This caused the tractor trailer that was struck to be pushed into a third tractor trailer which was then pushed into a forth tractor trailer.

Schultz sustained serious injuries and was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mercy Flight where he is currently listed in critical condition.  The other 3 drivers were not injured.

As a result of the collision, the Ryder tractor trailer’s fuel tank ruptured, spilling approximately 15 gallons of fuel.  NYS DEC spill response responded to the scene to assist.

All eastbound lanes were blocked and traffic was diverted at Exit 48A (Pembroke) for several hours while Troopers were assisted on scene by Troop T CVEU (Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit) and Troop A CRU (Collision Reconstruction Unit).  The crash remains under investigation at this time.
